Description: St John villas are plentiful these days but this popular St John villa is one of the most popular St John villa's and is a hit with both groups of couples and families with kids. The Main Villa of Great Expectations has 4 spacious air-conditioned bedrooms each with a King bed (convertible to 2 twins) located in 2 pavilions separated by a Great Room with a large living room, gourmet kitchen, and indoor and outdoor dining areas. A nearby 2 bedroom air-conditioned Guest House with its own living room and kitchen is also available for rent for larger groups. Each of the 6 air-conditioned bedrooms has a private bathroom with double sink lavatories and enchanting indoor/outdoor showers. Best of all, each of the Villa bedrooms have patios on both the east and west sides with spectacular water views. In addition, there is an air-conditioned exercise room, The Club Room, which also can serve as a small bedroom bringing the total number of bedrooms to 7 with 7 1/2 bathrooms.

Great Expectations is located on the south shore of St. John, about a 5 minute drive on paved roads to town (Cruz Bay) and to the Northshore Road where the famous, white sand beaches of the US Virgin Islands National Park are located. The closest beach for swimming and fabulous snorkeling is just a short 5 minute walk to Chocolate Hole -- a sandy beach with calm, protected water on the west side of the Villa. On the east side of this St John Villa is Hart Bay which is the closest beach for great beachcombing and breaking waves. All the openings are fully-screened. Italian tile adorns the floors and kitchen and bathroom counters. Native stone work laced with local coral and shells frames the Villa entrance and is used around the site to highlight the lush landscaping which include palm trees as well as banana trees. The Villa itself is furnished with custom-made teak furniture and carvings from Bali and very tastefully decorated with original paintings, sculptures, sconces and even a native mural.

This St John villa was designed, built, and is being managed to be GREEN and respectful to the wonderful St John environment. The orientation of the villa maximizes the wonderful easterly Caribbean tradewinds with the goal of minimizing the need for air-conditioning. Great Expectations boasts having the largest gray water cistern of any St John villa. This gray water cistern (which is below the tennis court) fuels the landscaping system for the entire property thereby minimizing the need to use RO water. In addition, each building has its own gray water system. Great Expectations also has solar hot water panels which also allow this St John villa to use less electricity to heat the water used throughout the property. In addition, each bedroom has solar curtains and the Great Room has a solar awning. We, of course, also encourage all guests to recycle and be respectful of our wonderful environment.

From our Trip Report for Sept. 2000: I could write a book about how wonderful Great Expectations was. Suffice to say, it met ALL of our expectations, and surpassed them! We had four equal airconditioned bedrooms and bathrooms, complete with outdoor showers (what a treat!). The villa is located on the crest of a hill, overlooking both Chocolate Hole and Hart Bay. This gave us both Sunrise and Sunset views. (sigh. I wanna go back...) It also allowed a constant breeze to blow through the villa. The doubles tennis court was very underutilized by us, but the Hermit crabs seemed to appreciate it. The kitchen had up-to-date appliances, and Caphalon cookware. Please note, however, there were no spices of any kind in the cupboard - not even salt! [note: since this review Great Expectations now is well stocked with spices of every kind!] We all agreed that if they could have fit in our luggage, the world's most comfortable lawn chairs would have disappeared when we left. Having a pool and Jacuzzi was just adding icing to the cake!

We had a great wedding and a great time at Great Expectations.
